How to calculate a name number
Enter the spelling you want to explore, choose Pythagorean or Chaldean, and calculate. The result shows the normalized spelling, letter values, original sum, and reduction. Open the working to inspect each step. A comparison applies the other alphabet table to the same spelling, making the difference between systems visible.
Choose the spelling before interpreting the number. The Pythagorean expression-number convention commonly uses the full birth name. A nickname or another spelling produces a calculation for those particular letters; it should not be presented as the same input. If you compare spellings, record which version you used.
Pythagorean and Chaldean letter values
The Pythagorean table assigns A through Z to repeating values 1 through 9. All letter values are added before reduction, and 11, 22, and 33 are retained as master numbers. A retained master number also has an underlying single-digit root.
The Chaldean table groups letters under values 1 through 8. This tool keeps the original compound total visible and reduces it to 1–9 without applying Western master-number stops. The tables assign different values to some letters, so disagreement is expected. See both complete tables in the name-number guide.
Worked example: the sample name Alex
In the Pythagorean table, A = 1, L = 3, E = 5, and X = 6. The total is 1 + 3 + 5 + 6 = 15, then 1 + 5 = 6. In the Chaldean table, A = 1, L = 3, E = 5, and X = 5. That total is 14, then 1 + 4 = 5.
Both calculations use ALEX. The difference comes from X having a different value, not from the calculator changing the spelling. This is a short teaching example; it does not imply that a first name is the full birth name required by every expression-number convention.
Spelling, accents, and supported letters
These tables cover Latin A–Z. Decomposable accents are removed, so José is calculated as JOSE. Spaces, apostrophes, hyphens, and periods act as separators and have no numerical value. The result shows the normalized spelling so you can check what was counted.
Other letters require a Latin spelling that you choose. There is no universal transliteration that this tool can silently apply to every language. If several spellings are possible, keep the choice explicit rather than choosing only the result you prefer. The calculation-method guide explains why spelling and alphabet rules matter together.
Questions about name numerology
Does a name number describe my personality?
The accompanying notes are symbolic associations for study and reflection, not a scientific assessment. Consider whether a prompt is useful in your situation without treating a number as a fixed identity or instruction to change your name.
Is this the same as a life path number?
No. A life path number uses a birth date. This calculator uses letter values. A personal year number uses a different date formula again.
Is my name uploaded or saved?
Calculation happens in your browser. Names are not sent to a calculation service, stored automatically, or placed in URLs. Clear removes the current inputs and result; changing an input clears the previous calculation. The optional text export contains the spelling and working.
